Ed Bax, a 45-year-old father of four, awoke the morning of October 23, 2003, with a terrible headache and unable to move his leg. He had suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and began to lose consciousness, never to regain it.

During a family discussion in the ICU waiting room, Nancy, Ed’s wife of 22 years, knew he had been a staunch supporter of organ donation. “His generous spirit and selflessness made the decision to donate his organs an easy one,” she recalled.

Ed’s heart, liver and kidneys were transplanted to others. Among the recipients was Simon, a 10-year-old boy who received one of Ed’s kidneys. Simon’s family later met the Baxes at the Memorial Golf Tournament that the Bax family sponsors in St. Louis.

“We have been very blessed to have an ongoing relationship with Simon and his family,” said Nancy. She and other relatives have also been gratified to attend the US Transplant Games. “Experiences such as these have helped us in our grief journey”.
