Corina Marie Murrieta was an independent young woman who loved sports, listening to oldies, and vacationing with her family. She played soccer and softball until the age of 14, sang in the choir and was a "wrestlerette." She attended cosmetology school and gave birth to children in 2002 and 2007. After suffering from depression and taking a fatal overdose of pills, Corina gave a better quality of life to three other people, including a family friend to whom the family directed the donation of one of her kidneys. Said her mother Regina, "I have never regretted my decision because it was the right thing to do."

Corina's Story

Corina Marie Murrieta was an independent young woman who loved sports, cooking, cleaning, yard work, hair, makeup, and listening to oldies. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family at Sea World and Laughlin, Nevada. Corina played soccer and softball until the age of 14, then in high school sang in the choir and was a "wrestlerette." She attended cosmetology school at Riverside Community College for two years and gave birth to children in 2002 and 2007.

After suffering from depression since the previous year, on April 17, 2008, Corina took an overdose of pills and Corina was taken to the hospital. Three days later, on her 26th birthday, Corina was determined to be brain dead. Shortly after, Corina's mother Regina was approached by OneLegacy about donating her organs.

"As our family got together to discuss the donation, it was brought to our attention that a very close family friend needed a kidney," recalled Regina. "I knew then and there that I wanted this gentleman to have one." It was determined they were a match and the transplant took place on April 20.

"Corina did not die in vain," said Regina. "She suffered depression and took her own life, but in the end she gave a better quality of life to three other people. I know in my heart and have never regretted my decision because it was the right thing to do. It inspired me to get involved and tell her story in the hopes that others will consider organ donation. It has also helped the healing process tremendously because I feel that Corina is a part of someone and still living within that person."
