Elizabeth's Story
Elizabeth "Liz" Sutherland arrived on Maui in 1989. She fell in love with the ocean and the beautiful tropical lifestyle the islands offer. She made many dear friends, worked hard, and took full advantage of all the wonderful outdoor activities on the island. In 2009, Elizabeth's Hawaii adventure ended on a joy-filled sunset horseback ride in a dark green pasture. At the time she suffered a brain aneurysm, she was laughing with friends and left the world happy. Liz's family was grateful to know she wasn't alone.
Liz was born in Tucson, Arizona and graduated from Arizona State University. She is survived by her parents William and Alice Sutherland, three sisters, Debbie, Cathy and Toni, along with many nieces and nephews. Her maternal grandparents were farmers, and her paternal grandparents owned a stagecoach line and later a cattle ranch. Many landmarks in the area are named after the Sutherland family. She must have inherited her love of adventure and her beautiful free spirit from her ancestors.
Liz was smart, independent and adventurous. She touched many lives with her humor and compassion. She would be thrilled to know that she has helped others to live healthier lives through her gift of donation. One way the Sutherland family remembers Liz and shows their support for her decision to become an organ and tissue donor is by displaying the "Be an organ donor" license plates in Arizona.
