Fabian Trujillo was a loving father, a mentor to the hundreds of children he taught and coached in sports, and a consummate athlete who was inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993. After suffering fatal injuries in a highway traffic accident, he became an organ and tissue donor. Fabian saved four lives through organ donation, gave the gift of sight through his corneas, and helped others heal and live pain-free lives through his gift of bone and other tissue. In life, Fabian had found his calling to service in public schools, and in death he continued that service by touching many lives through organ donation.
Fabian's Story
Fabian Trujillo believed in all the possibilities this world had to offer. He was famous for his one-liners as well as his huge sense of humor. He was tough yet compassionate, and although he was outgoing and had a larger-than-life presence, he was a solitary man who loved nothing more than spending quiet days fishing with his girls and enjoying the great outdoors.
Above all, Fabian was a family man. He was a devoted father to Valerie, Kathleen, Celeste, Logan and step-father to Brooke. He also had three sisters and six brothers, and was a mentor and inspiration to many.
In a life lived to its fullest, Fabian achieved local and state stardom as an outstanding athlete throughout high school and college. He achieved national recognition as a four-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American in cross-country from 1981 to 1984, and was inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993. He served as an educator to special needs students and as a phys ed coach in elementary and high schools, and was a mentor to the hundreds of children he taught and coached.
After suffering fatal injuries in a highway traffic accident, 50-year-old Fabian died on February 10, 2011. He saved four lives through organ donation, gave the gift of sight as a cornea donor, and helped others heal and live pain-free lives through his gift of bone and other tissue.
In life, Fabian had found his calling to service in public schools, and in death he continued that service by touching many lives through organ donation. While his memory will always be with his family, the emptiness felt from his passing will take a long time to heal. However, knowing Fabian is still living through others comforts them and for that they are thankful.
