Heather's Story
Heather Miller died March 31, 2008, from injuries she sustained as a result of a horrific car crash. Heather was six weeks away from graduating from the nursing program at WVU at the time of her death. Heather planned on continuing her education and becoming a nurse anesthetist with a passion to work in critical care. She also had a passion for music.
Heather was an organ donor. It was Heather's choice to give the most selfless gift any person can give, the gift of life. Heather was able to donate her heart, both of her kidneys, liver, tissue, and bone.
"As parents, we never imagined what an impact this could make on our family as well as the community of Wheeling, W. Va. We created the Heather Miller Memorial Golf Scramble, which has raised thousands of dollars for a scholarship as well as other deserving charities in Heather's name" said Heather's mother Jody.
Two years after Heather's death, her left kidney recipient came to Wheeling and attended the 3rd annual Scramble. Just recently, through the help of the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), the Millers have been in contact with Heather's liver recipient. Jody described the experience of meeting Heather's recipients: "It's very difficult to explain the overwhelming feeling of meeting these recipients. It is an amazing feeling to meet people that have had a second chance at life because of our daughter. With the help of our very special family, friends, recipient families and CORE, we have truly learned the meaning of 'One More Day.' For the gift of life Heather has given to others, she will always be our hero."
