A registered donor, "Kevin prayed that his donation would lessen the suffering of another family," said his father Richard. "We who loved him in life know that his prayer was answered." The New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson Sr. Memorial Bridge now stands near the place where he died.

Kevin's Story

Kevin Patrick Dobson was born July 5, 1967 in Buffalo, N.Y. Through his formative years, he showed a willingness to help others that earned him friendships that lasted a lifetime. Sadly, his mother Donna suffered from multiple sclerosis, and Kevin dedicated endless hours at her side and was holding her hand when she passed.

Above all things in life, Kevin was most proud of his children, his son Kevin Patrick Dobson, Jr., daughters Jamie Kathleen and Brooke Lauren Dobson, and step-son Andrew Hastings.

Kevin's eagerness to help those who were victimized led him to a career as a New York State Trooper. As a police officer he earned the admiration of his coworkers and commendations from his superior officers.

On March 26, 2011 at age 43, Kevin was killed while performing his duties as a police officer. Keeping the highways of New York safe, Kevin was struck by a passing motorist and died instantly.

The terrible grief suffered by all who knew him was lessened somewhat in knowing his gift of life lasted well beyond his death. "Kevin prayed that his donation would lessen the suffering of another family," said his father, Richard Dobson. "We who loved him in life know that prayer was answered.

Kevin's legacy lives on in a very public way, In October 2013, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York signed legislation to rename the I-290 bridge at the Colvin exit, near where Kevin died, as the New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson Sr. Memorial Bridge.
