Danielle's Story
Danielle Lee Bogue was 22-years-old and full of life in spring of 2007. She had just landed a great job teaching at a Ft. Myers, FL school for at-risk teens where she felt she could make a difference in the lives of others.
A new mother, Danielle spent most of her free time with her family. Although she was notoriously girly, Danielle was equally at home in the mud or on a four-wheeler.
In April, with her four-month-old daughter, Hannah, in the back seat, a tire on Danielle's car blew out, and the vehicle rolled over. Danielle was critically injured, while Hannah survived without a scratch. When Danielle's mother, Dana, realized her daughter would not survive, she brought up the subject of organ donation.
"We had talked about it," Dana recalled. "When she discussed the notion with family, I remember thinking that donation was the right and loving thing to do." With that decision, Danielle saved five lives via organ donation, helped countless others through tissue donation, and gave the gift of sight as a cornea donor.
Hannah is now eight years old and has been adopted by Dana and her husband, Derrick. During the week of Valentine's Day 2014, nearly seven years after losing her mother, Hannah met Danielle's heart recipient, Andrew. During that first meeting, she found the bond she had been missing when she pressed a stethoscope against Andrew's chest and listened, for the first time since she was four months old, to the sound of her mother's heartbeat.
Since then Hannah has carried on Danielle's legacy. She volunteers with Dana to share her mother's story as a donor. And, as Dana continues to correspond with the recipients of Danielle's other organs, Hannah looks forward to meeting others who are alive today thanks to Danielle's generosity.
