KEEGAN’S STORY
"You don't know me, but I knew Keegan," is a phrase Keegan's family hears often. A young man with a legacy so incredible, it pours across the nation like that of a winter sunset. He was larger-than-life with a contagious smile. Keegan never knew a stranger, giving as much energy and kindness to those he just met as those he knew for years. To know Keegan Johnson was to know what genuine love felt like.
Keegan was a football player at both Dorman High School and Chapman High School and a passionate Clemson Tiger fan. To honor his dedication to the game, Keegan's family created the Keegan Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Every year a student from each school will be awarded a scholarship, giving them the opportunity to share Keegan's light with the world. Today, his brothers carry on his legacy in their own ways. Kayden, 16, is as driven and dedicated as his big brother while Kamdyn, 13, is just as hardworking and captivated by sports. Their smiles and gracious hearts will remind you of the good in the world, just as Keegan's did.
Keegan was always healthy and active. About a week before going to the hospital, Keegan started to feel ill. What was initially diagnosed as a virus was actually a rare bacterium, causing meningitis and a brain infection. His family was heartbroken and devasted but knew this was the moment to honor a decision Keegan already made… to be an organ donor.
At 17-years old, Keegan became the hero he was always meant to be, saving four lives by donating five organs. His legacy is one that has created a tidal wave ripple effect across the country. His family, friends, and hospital staff gathered on February 7th, 2019, to celebrate his life with an honor walk, one of the last to be hosted before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Today, his loved ones continue to celebrate him by all registering as organ, eye, and tissue donors and educating anyone willing to listen on the importance of saying "YES" to the gift of life.
Keegan reminds us of what it means to love fiercely and give graciously. He was always meant to shine on a grand platform. It is only fitting that his beautiful smile adorns the 2022 Donate Life Rose Parade float, inspiring millions.
