John’s Story
John Richard Taylor’s unassuming demeanor belied an intrepid spirit that only a lifetime of adventures could portray.
Born in Nottingham, England, John spent his early adulthood proudly serving in the British Military before choosing to make America his permanent home in 1979.
As a geophysicist for a large oil company, John traveled the world to provide for his family. His responsibility was considerable; to protect communities, wildlife, and the environment from any adverse impact made by the search for oil. In his quest to advocate for these groups, he filled his passport with stamps from Nairobi, Cameroon, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Greece, and Turkey among others. Taking advantage of opportunities that only present themselves to few, John made a lasting mark on a global scale.
While living in Zambia in the 1970s, John demonstrated his fighting spirit when he contracted malaria and glandular fever. He also fought back after a serious heart attack 11 years ago. He hung on to play the most important role in his life, Papa to his grandchildren, which he did with all his heart. John loved his family, and his life!
After passing away in 2015 from complications arising from Coronary Artery Disease, John’s daughter Keri was surprised to find out how many people her father’s gift of tissue donation was able to help. John used to joke that no one would “be able to use anything when I am gone.” His family was happy to find that it couldn’t be further from the truth. John’s family is so proud that he has been able to impact 53 lives through his last selfless act.
As an ER nurse, Keri feels changed by the experience of her own loss and the impact that donation has had on it. She has new found passion to educate people about the incredible good that can be done with tissue donation. She now cares for her patients and their families differently, knowing that even in the throes of trauma, there is opportunity to live and give selflessly.
