Andrew Campbell
Organ donor
Age 22 – Portland, ME
Donated on 06/26/2007
at Maine Medical Center
Honored by New England Donor Services
Andrew was full of life; he never missed a chance to make someone smile or laugh. Sometimes his antics were a little over the top, but that was his personality. In February of 2007, Andrew went to the DMV to replace his lost driver’s license. He was asked by the clerk if he wanted to be an organ donor. He said “yes.” Four short months later, on June 26th, 2007, he suffered a severe head injury. There was no chance of recovery. His family knew his wish was to be an organ donor, and through his gift, he helped save four lives. His heart went to Patrick, a 55 year old man, who in the past 10 years has seen his son marry and welcomed a grandchild into the world.
Andrew’s Story
In February of 2007, Andrew went to the DMV to replace his lost driver’s license. He was asked by the clerk if he wanted to be an organ donor. At the age of 22, I’m sure he felt as invincible as most his age, but he said yes. Four short months later, June 26th, 2007, he suffered a severe head injury. There was no chance of recovery; it was time to honor his promise. I knew his wish was to be an organ donor; that decision was easy. Letting him go was heartbreaking for all of us, but as his Mom I can’t put it into words, even today.
Andrew was full of life; he never missed a chance to make someone smile or laugh. Sometimes his antics were a little over the top but that was who he was. I know that he would be proud that in the end he saved four lives. His heart went to Patrick, a 55 year old man, who in the past 10 years has seen his son marry and welcomed a grandchild into the world. My children and I have met Patrick and listened to Andrew’s heart beat as it gave life to Patrick. One of his kidneys went to a man who was advised that they would probably never be able to find him a match. On his 60th birthday, Bill received the call. Bill is enjoying his many grandchildren and, like Andrew, Bill is always smiling. His other kidney and his liver were donated also; I have received lovely letters from both recipients.
Family and friends where the most important thing to Andrew, so I know he would be proud that he gave life to others so that they could enjoy their family and friends for as long as possible.
A funny side note is that Andrew was a huge Red Sox fan. It happens that Patrick, his heart recipient, is a lifelong Yankees Fan. I warned Patrick that he may very well have a “change of heart” and start cheering for the Red Sox. He assured me that when the Yankees play the Red Sox he will be happy with whichever team wins!
